DeShawn Jenkins
(They/Them)
DeShawn is a dynamic multi-disciplinary artist based in New York City, originally hailing from Cleveland, OH. From an early age, DeShawn's life was steeped in music, growing up in a musically gifted family. Their journey in the arts led them to study Vocal Music and Theater at the Cleveland School of the Arts, Columbia College Chicago, and Berklee College of Music, solidifying their deep connection to music and rhythmic expression.
DeShawn's musical career took off with the release of their fourth independent solo album under the moniker “DAJ.” This milestone led to an opportunity to work with three-time Tony Award winner Hinton Battle on various productions in New York City, Washington, DC, and Tokyo, Japan. This experience offered DeShawn a comprehensive understanding of the professional entertainment industry, enhancing their skills in both performance and production.
In 2018, DeShawn returned to New York City full-time, where they explored various media forms, including theater, visual art, podcasts, music, and live performance. This creative exploration laid the foundation for their production company. DeShawn wrote, directed, and produced a full-length adaptation of Bruce Coville's short story “Am I Blue?”, which premiered at the New York Theater Festival and garnered nominations for Best Play, Best Director, and Best Actor in the 2019 season.
DeShawn continued to break new ground with a featured role in “The Civility of Albert Cashier,” a musical recounting the true story of a trans man who fought for the North during the American Civil War. This production was historic, featuring the first all Trans, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming cast and crew in New York City.
In early 2024, DeShawn released their first EP under their own name, “Now, Wait Just A Damn Minute!”—an Alternative R&B Symphony in four movements.
DeShawn’s latest project will be their upcoming self-titled EP, featuring the standout track "Blame It On The Full Moon." This highly anticipated project marks a new chapter in their musical journey. Fans and new listeners alike can expect a deep dive into DeShawn's innovative sound and heartfelt storytelling through their fusion of genres and earnest lyrics.
In addition to their music, DeShawn is working on a Musical Short Film titled “Flight 1983, EST.” (part 1 of a 4-part saga) starting production in the fall. Residing in beautiful upstate New York with their partners and a beloved family of animals—two dogs, one cat, and two guinea pigs—DeShawn continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression. Their work not only entertains but also challenges and inspires, making them a unique and influential voice in contemporary art and music.
